An emergency call for Girls Not Brides

Ten years ago, I met Samir Chaudury, who is a paediatrician and who established Child in Need Institute to treat malnutrition of infants (still a huge problem in India), in a very poor district in Kolkata in 1974. By treating the mothers as well and teaching them cooking skills, CINI from the outset focused on lasting change and empowerment, rather than just treating the medial symptoms. Since then CINI has grown into an NGO that covers most of West-Bengal, and which has support/fundraising groups in a number of countries, among them in Italy, where Chaudury lives half of the year with his family. CINI focuses on a broad range of issues related to pregnancy, early childhood, education and adolescence as a particularly vulnerable age. As part of this work, they run a project, SABLA, Girls Not Brides aimed at preventing child marriage. This Christmas, Chaudury wrote to me with an emergency call: The funding for this project has been discontinued, and they need to raise 20000$ by mid January 2019. The Italian branch of CINI has started a fundraising campaign, and I encourage FB friends to donate via the campaign.

With friendly regards,
Margunn Bjørnholt
